Note: As we have never actually HAD a "zombie" outbreak, much of this definition is guessing and logical deductions. Do not take it to heart, as the real disease may differ from what is written below.
A "Zombie" is a human who has been infected by either a parasite or the cross-mutation Mad Rabies. This infection is transmitted by a bite of another human. After entering the body, the disease works it's way to the brain, which is what it feeds on. This takes an unknown amount of time, as we do not know how fast the disease travels and the location of the bite. It takes control of the brain, making it want to bite another human. This does not mean, however, that the human will stop taking care of itself. It will eat and drink. But, as the disease feeds on the brain, the human will gradually decrease in intelligence. They will go from fully functional to a sluggish, slow, "zombie", wanting to only bite another human before it dies. As the human is still alive, it will feel pain. It can also be knocked out. And, while at the fully functional stage, will be able to talk to you, and will look normal. The clue to whether it is infected, is the extensive amount of saliva that they have.
So, at the sluggish state, the "zombie" as we will now call it, will behave mostly like the zombies we know and love in the movies and games. The only difference will be that they can feel pain, they can be knocked out, and they will vary in intelligence, due to where in the breakdown process they are and what parts of the brain the disease eats. After this stage comes the crawling stage. The "zombie" will now be so stupid due to lack of a brain, it will either lay on the ground waiting for a survivor, or will be so intent on finding a human to bite, they will slowly crawl around looking for you. This is the last stage before death takes the "zombie." After the "zombie" dies, the disease will continue eating the rest of the flesh of the "zombie" until there is nothing left but bones. Then, the disease will die.
